John Part 2: Miracle Jesus

After the first sermon series from John’s gospel which focused on those meeting Jesus and their experiences and reactions to him, this second series would take a look at the 6 of the 8 miracle stories in John (minus the two covered in the first series and excluding the resurrection of Jesus). These carefully selected details from Jesus’ ministry certainly were curated with the knowledge of the many miracles Matthew, Mark and Luke included in there Gospels and reflect the attention John is placing on a new Kingdom being introduced by Jesus the Messiah. Most of these passages can be read in full with only John 9 needing to be read in part for time considerations.

Jonah

Considering a Fall 2025 sermon series on the book of Jonah. This would be just before Advent and would possibly follow just behind or a couple of weeks behind a sermon series from John on Jesus’ Miracles there and what the show us about the Kingdom of Heaven. Jonah is a story of the message of God overcoming the prophet’s unforgiving heart and includes a couple of miracles that intended to show the prophet the extent of God’s forgiveness, both to the wicked “other” and to the “righteous” prophet. Jonah may not have been the inspiration for Jesus’ prodigal son’s older brother, but perhaps Jonah would have identified with the later character.

G44 – 2025 11 02 – Jonah 1 – The Message Refused
G45 – 2025 11 09 – Jonah 2 – The Repentant Messenger
G46 – 2025 11 16 – Jonah 3 – The Reluctant Messenger

1 Corinthians Parts 2 and 3

Just a post a starting to carve out what the next 2 sermon series on 1 Corinthians could look like. The first four chapters were covered in Fall 2024. Below is a quick break down of the text as it could be broken into weekly divisions. If a more overview kind of sermon series was designed, topics that get revisited a number of times could be grouped. Frankly there is a lot of intersection in the passages about sexual immorality, pagan culture tempting Christian practice, marriage fidelity in Christ-honoring homes, everyday life in a Pagan worshiping context. Then the Christian worship context comes into focus from chapters 11 to 14.

1 Cor 5:1-12 – Sin or Celebration, Expel the Brother
1 Cor 6:1-10 – Settling Accounts, Lawsuits within
1 Cor 6:11-20 – Sin to Flee From, More Sexual Immorality

1 Cor 7:1-40 – A – Singleness and Marriage
1 Cor 7:1-40 – B – Complex Marriages
1 Cor 7:1-40 – C – Widowhood, Divorce, and Families

1 Cor 8:1-13 – Idolatrous Meat
1 Cor 9:1-18 – Apostolic Rights
1 Cor 9:19-27 – Freedom and Discipline

1 Cor 10:1-13 – Tempted Away, More Sexual Immorality
1 Cor 10:14-11:1 – Idols vs. Freedom
1 Cor 11:2-16 – Hair and head coverings
1 Cor 11:17-34 – Private Communion

1 Cor 12:1-30 – One Body, Many Gifts
1 Cor 13:1-13 – Love with Faith & Hope Above Gifts
1 Cor 14:1-25 – Worship Draws Toward God
1 Cor 14:26-40 – Providing Both Order and Openness

1 Cor 15:1-58 (we’ve covered) – Maybe 3 weeks on Resurrection.
Maybe The Fact / Necessity, The Cosmic Implications, The Personal Implications. Not sure
1 Cor 16:1-23 – Could skip or do one or two sermons about following faithful examples

You Don’t Love Them

Written:  Aug 7, 2022

A passing thought of self reflection:

That person you love… you might not love them as much as you love who you think they are.  You may be projecting much of yourself into the spaces they haven’t shared with you yet. There may be things they have shared that you’ve conveniently ignored or reinterpreted so you can keep liking them as you desire. If you really knew them, really understood what they thought about things, would it be hard to love them? If they shared things that bored you or worse, downright upset you, could you love them? Once their real self clearly separated from who you hoped they were, would disappointment poison your love for them? Once they defied your logic, confounded your sensibilities, would your love become muddled or muted? Perhaps you don’t love them. Perhaps you love the idea of them. Perhaps you don’t love them as themselves but only as a character in your script. Perhaps you don’t love them, you merely love yourself and how they fit into your world.

What would it mean to love them and their entire self? Would it mean a commitment to endure beyond disinterest to sincere appreciation? Would it mean learning a passable proficiency in areas they take the lead role in? Would it mean patience when offended or gentleness when confronted? Would it mean endurance when pressed beyond comfort? Maybe it would mean real self sacrifice. Maybe it would be like one friend laying down their selfishness and letting it die for the real self of their friend to be resurrected and seen and loved for what it is, for what God created it to be.
